Youthworks and Supervised Employment Education

When the public school system cannot meet the emotional or behavioral needs of students, they may be referred to Natchaug Hospital’s clinical day treatment schools. These same needs make it challenging or even impossible for the students to be admitted to vocational secondary schools, where they would learn valuable training and gain work experience.

To give these students the real-world experience they need, Natchaug Hospital runs the Youthworks and Supervised Employment Education programs.

The Youthworks program provides students with vocational training in areas like carpentry, agriculture, and automotive repair. The overall goal is to improve their post-graduate employability and increase their self-esteem. Since its inception, students have participated in a number of hands-on projects including mechanical work on an antique tractor; the construction of a shed, chicken coop, and greenhouse; and the creation of a memorial fountain.

Supervised Employment Education (S.E.E.) gives students the opportunity to explore community employment opportunities in the community. This teacher-supervised work experience gives students the chance to find a vocation that suits their interests. It also gives local business owners the chance to experience first-hand the skills that Joshua Center students have to offer.
